The history of the POISE Users' Group has spanned 19 years, seen the transition of
POISE to Campus America, met from one end of the continent to the other, and upheld the
tradition of offering an open forum for users to discuss issues relating to the POISE
software.
The first POISE Users' meeting was held in 1978 at Hutchinson Community College,
Hutchinson, Kansas. That year less than ten colleges were represented.
From that history-making year, POISE Users' meetings have been held every year at a
site hosted by a campus using POISE software. Locations have ranged from Roswell, New
Mexico in the Southwest to Boston, Massachusetts in the Northeast.
In 1986 Campus America bought the POISE Company, Inc. The first POISE Users' meeting
after this acquisition was held in Lincoln, Nebraska. At that time a group dubbed
"The Grey Beards" emerged and began negotiating with Campus America concerning
the possibility of organizing and incorporating the POISE Users' Group. The "Grey
Beards" consisted of Robert Hansen, Dot Hess, Jerry Hoover, and Bill Siders. Of those
original four, three of them are still active in the POISE Users' Group.
As PUG evolved, the K12 Education group using Campus America's SIS software joined with
the group in 1989.
During the years of 1989 through 1991, the Bylaws of the POISE Users' Group were
established, and on May 23, 1991 the POISE Users' Group officially became the POISE Users'
Group, Inc. (PUG, Inc.) The initial Board of Directors of PUG, Inc., included:
- Jerry Hoover, President
- David Tilton, President Elect
- Renee Bunck, Secretary
- Robert Hansen, Member at Large
- Larry Howell, Exoficio Member
Others Involved in this first year of PUG, Inc. were:
- Dot Hess, Liaison to Campus America
- Paul Holmes, Publications Committee Chair
- Martin Reeves, Special Projects Com. Chair
- Bill Siders, Nominating Committee Chair
- Steve Burrell, Conference Coordinator
Of those initial board members, six are still active members of the POISE Users' Group,
Inc. and two joined Campus America.
The first non-campus site for a POISE Users' Group meeting was held in Knoxville, TN.
in June of 1995. The largest attended POISE Users' Group, Inc. meeting was held in Boston,
MA. in 1992 with more than 300 in attendance.
In 1996, the POISE Users' Group, Inc. meeting was held at its first international site.
The meeting was held in Surrey, BC, Canada with 203 people in attendance representing 74
colleges and K12 sites.
In 1999 Campus America was purchased by Jenzabar,
Inc. The POISE product became one of the 4 software product supported by
Jenzabar, Inc. The POISE product was rename Jenzabar PX in the fall of
2001.
In 2003 ESP (Educational Systems Products) and
Jenzabar signed a ten (10) year agreement which will insure support and
development of the PX product.
